DAET SEED FARM
Calasgasan, Daet, Camarines Norte

Historical Background

The Daet Seed Farm is located at Purok 2, Barangay Calasgasan, Daet, Camarines Norte, 5 kilometers away from the town proper. It has a total land area of 56.8739 hectares, but only 23.5 hectares is occupied by the Daet Seed Farm. The remaining 33.3 hectare area is occupied by the LGU Provincial Office (OPAG and PVO) by virtue of the MOA signed on January 31, 2005 by then OIC Cesar M. Drilon (representing Secretary Arthur C. Yap in behalf of the Department of Agriculture) and by Hon. Governor Jesus Typoco, Jr.

The Daet Seed Farm had its beginnings when the government created Republic Act 3045 known as the Abaca Development Program Law providing the Bureau of Plant Industry (BPI) the following mandate: a) production of high quality certified abaca seedlings and planting materials for the nationwide rehabilitation of abaca; b) intensification of both cultural and laboratory researches; c) development of high-yielding varieties which are also resistant to pests and diseases; d) establishment of Provincial Seed Bank and research station in the Province of Camarines Norte.

The government then created a law by virtue of Republic Act 3639 issued on January 1, 1930, modifying the functions of the Bureau of Plant Industry in Bicol to achieve the following general objectives:

1) Development and implementation of plant industries in the Philippines through research
2) Production of high quality seeds (breeder, foundation, registered and certified seeds) and planting materials for distribution to farmers and seed producers; and
3) Crop protection and regulatory control of pests and diseases

Bicol Abaca Experiment Station was established on June 17, 1963. It was terminated in June 1974. It was also known as the Bicol Abaca Development Board and later as Abaca and Other Fibers Development Program. It was then that the BPI renamed the station to Daet Seed Farm.

One of the programs of the BPI was the Expanded Seed Production and Distribution Program which was funded by the RP-Japan Project Loan. The project also focused on infrastructures to improve farm facilities prior to the efficient production and distribution of seeds and planting materials.

In year 2002, the Daet Seed Farm is renamed as DA-ROS Daet under the Regional Integrated Agricultural Research Center for Lowland and Rainfed Development Zone of the Department of Agriculture, Regional Field Unit No. 5.
