Regional Situationer

The Bicol peninsula straddles the major sealanes that connect to Manila, the Philippines’ business center and its neighboring East Asian key cities. It is known as the land of the majestic and mysterious Mayon Volcano, of pristine beaches, forest parks, beautiful lakes, rivers and mountain ranges. Its rich natural resources make the region a geothermal energy producer and mineral-based production center; strategically located as agro-industrial center, as another food basket of Luzon; and as South Luzon gateway to the Visayas and Mindanao.

 

Agriculture and Bicol's Economy

The sector contributes 25.6% to the region’s economic output in 2011. Among sectors, agriculture absorbs the biggest proportion of the region’s labor force. It provides employment to 40.7% of the labor force, down from 42.2% in 2009. Close to 40% of all families derived their income from the sector. The sector accounts for 70% of all commodity outflows of the region (food and live animals) Major exporter of coconut products, abaca fibers, precious metals and minerals, and pili products.
