DA Bicol holds a Press Conference on African Swine Fever (ASF) in Naga City on Feb. 21, 2020 following the declaration of the first case of ASF in Bicol. 

Rodel P. Tornilla, DA Bicol Regional Exec Director was joined by Governor Migz Villafuerte of Camarines Sur, Mayor Nelson Legacion of Naga City, NMIS regional director Alex Templonuevo and BAI Veterinary Quarantine Officer Emmanuel Villafuerte.

Governor Villafuerte assures the public that ASF is not a human health concern. Tornilla on the other hand said that elevated response and biosafety measures are already in place to contain, control and manage this animal disease.

Depopulation of all breeds of swine (including those apparently healthy) within the 1-kilometer radius from the site of infection in Sto. Domingo, Bombon has already commenced on Feb. 20.

Director Tornilla also announced that owners of swine from 1 km radius which will be depopulated will receive P5,000 for every head of swine. But only a maximum of 20 heads per farmer will be granted. Suckling piglets are not included in the indemnification.

Governor Villafuerte announced during the press con that the Provincial Government will add P3,000 indemnification for every head of swine depopulated.

Close to 60 members of local media and private sector participated in the press briefing which was facilitated by Emily Bordado, chief of RAFIS.
